USDA grant deadline extended

U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development officials recently announced an application extension for the Value-Added Producer Grant program (VAPG). The new application deadline is April 8. The extension was made because of changes under the 2014 Farm Bill signed into law last month.

VAPG may be used for feasibility studies or business plans to develop on-farm processing facilities, or working capital for marketing value-added agricultural products, and renewable energy projects, including anaerobic digesters, wind or solar technologies. For example, a producer interested in selling compost derived from an anaerobic digester could receive assistance for a business or marketing plan through the program. Plans for feed production and sales programs could also benefit from VAPG.

Energy projects using wind, solar or biogas are eligible only if the renewable energy will be used on-farm to power another value-added activity; simple energy generation from these resources is not eligible.

Producers seeking more information on the VAPG or other available programs should contact DFA Energy at 816-801-6146 or by email at geharper@dfamilk.com.
